Environmentally Friendly Cooking with Low Carbon Imprint: GoArticles.com: "The basic principle is high heat for a short period of time. Any kind of fuel can be used. If you are living in a modern city, the wok can be used on an electric or gas stove. If you are living in the countryside, the wok can operate on pieces of wood, dried cow dung, coal, or charcoal. You can take it on camping trips and just use small pieces of wood. The amount of fuel necessary to cook your meal is miniscule. The carbon imprint is minimal, certainly far less than the standard electric stove. And even if its used on an electric stove, it consumes significantly less electricity."
Its unrealistic to expect the world to adopt this style of cooking 100%. But this is not the purpose of my article. Its just to illustrate that less technology is often better for the overall health of the planet. Millions of families in energy starved regions use something similar to wok cooking. The principle fuel source is often dried cow dung. In India, in the countryside, this is the major cooking fuel source. You can see dried cow dung patties all over the place. Just put a couple in the fire and you have your fuel for dinner. It may not be fun making these patties but it certainly enables these energy starved villagers to enjoy hot meals and boiled water. Wait until they all have electric stoves and ovens; we'll see a huge increase in energy consumption. Of course, its a better living standard but its not better for the planet overall.
